Saturday Catch-Up: Models and Frameworks

Updated: 2 days ago

A central proficiency we need to navigate as Change Managers is the landscape of change management models and frameworks on offer. Change is essentially a business discipline, generalist in nature, yet very situation-specific. The unique combination of variables you face in any assignment calls for a top toolkit. Versatile Change Managers who can draw on their skills to apply the right tools will be leading the way for their organisations and stepping through the challenges to find solutions. In today's Saturday catch-up, we look back at some of the models and frameworks in our toolkit.

  1. A Change Manager's audit against the McKinsey 7-S Framework (27 March 2024) looked at how relevant this framework is to delivering change management. The model provides seven interrelated factors (strategy, structure, systems, shared values, skills, style, and staff) to gain a holistic view of operations. We reviewed practical change management experiences to understand whether this level of coordination increased the likelihood of change success.

  2. The mystery of Agile Change Management (14 February 2024) explored how change managers can support an agile environment, recognising that agile software development methods have now become mainstream in managing projects and teams.

  3. War Stories with Kotter, Part 1: Institute Change (9 April 2024) commenced a deep-dive series into Kotter's 8-Step Process for Leading Change. This post focused on the critical, often forgotten step of Institute Change (sustainability) in a high-level government project, examining how the agency worked towards making change stick.

  4. War Stories with Kotter, Part 2: Enlist a Volunteer Army (10 April 2024) explored Kotter's concept of a "volunteer army" and how it compares to a traditional change agent network or community. This army may be a group of committed individuals who participate from a sense of belief in the vision and purpose for the change, rather than holding formal, embedded roles.

  5. Building a Change Agent Network: A Strategic Approach (11 April 2024) followed up with a more specific, concise guide on creating the kind of change agent network that can effectively drive organisational change.
